Remember when I posted a while back about my fitness goals for this year? Well, last week I took my first step to reaching one of them: I signed up for my first sprint triathlon!
On September 8th, I’ll be completing the Mainiac Sprint Tri in Biddeford, ME. I chose this race mainly because it’s in Derek’s home town. Biddeford Pool is gorgeous and I’m fairly familiar with the area, so I think it’ll be great for my first race.
I’ve always been really hesitant to do a triathlon because of my fear of biking. Even though I’ve always thought a tri would be fun, it’s been so much easier to just stick to my comfort zone of running. Lately though, since I’ve been really sick of running, I’ve done a little more biking and it’s been a great change of pace. I feel a lot more comfortable on the bike than I did last year – my thoughts about getting doored or hitting an enormous pothole have definitely decreased! I’m thinking about biking to work. but I have to make like 4-5 left-hand turns in traffic to get there and I’m a bit freaked out about that – we’ll see what happens!
I found an 8-week training program from my dude Hal Higdon that seems really doable. I honestly can’t wait to get started – I already bought myself an Xterra wetsuit that I found on major sale last week:
Note to self – vacation is very dangerous for my credit card account and I should probably have one of my friends cut my credit cards in half to stop me from doing further damage. We had off all last week before transitioning to our summer school program, and I definitely spent way too much time on Pinterest and Amazon. I really need to read a book or something.
Have you ever done a triathlon? What training plan did you use?
Are you afraid of biking?
Do you have a shopping and/or Pinterest problem?
